Vision, Mission and Message

Many organizations mix Vision and Mission. Clarify these important terms:
  • Vision is "why" an entity exists.
  • Mission is "what" the organization does, "how" it accomplishes its tasks and defines the expected results from its dedicated endeavors.
  • Vision provides the reasons behind the action; Mission is the action.

In combination with Values, the principles upon which we agree, Vision and Mission provide a solid framework of continuity for an organization that seeks to fulfill its goals in cooperation with its unchangeable foundations.

  • If you are the leader, consider your Vision: why does your organization exist?
  • If you are the leader, clearly articulate Mission with your Team.

Now look closely at your Message, the life-changing lessons you and your group seek to model.

  • How will you and your group be remembered?
  • What lessons will your examples teach, and to whom?
