Volume II, Number 10 May, 2007

Leaders focus on achieving best-deliverables through building committed followers. The idea that leadership controls people to become something they're not, or manipulates people to produce what they otherwise may not, is not what a great leader considers as a viable practice.

Investing in people is the central goal of the committed leader who knows that when this investment blooms, two results are achieved: great people and great production. What a contrast this is to the post-modern office in which so many leaders and followers work, where far too often people are valuable only on the basis of what they produce.

Which characterizes your work place? People who desire to grow and are inspired by leadership to do so? Or, people who are valued for no more than what they produce? Is leadership in your organization a contact that builds or a contract that stifles?

Production is necessary. It's why business exists. No argument there. What great leaders recognize is their responsibility to build through their people, not in spite of them.
