Leaders who have their follower's best interests at heart want to create working relationships of interdependence with them. It's a worthy goal.
When a leader-follower relationship begins, a state of dependence often exists as the follower leans heavily on the presence and personality of the leader. A second and more defined stage occurs when the leader has positional authority over, and responsibility for, the follower's actions. Independence grows as the leader-follower relationship seeks to mature both individuals.
But in the third level, defined in Leadership Is-* as the "Investment Track," a more long-lasting state of interaction is reached, where leader and follower work together, nurturing and supporting each other, building legacy. This state is where great leadership thrives and invests in followers.
If you are the leader, consider these questions: How much do your followers depend on you? Do they want to be independent of you? Or do you share a relationship of interdependence with them, where both are growing and contributing to each other's successes?
