Values, Vision, Mission and Message* are four essentials on which every leader and follower should seek agreement if they want to build working relationships that last.
Values are the principles upon which the leader and follower agree. Often these are vital intangibles such as trust, integrity, hope, assurance, confidence, and reliability. Great relationships include and rest upon these.
Vision is why an entity exists. What is the reason for your leader-follower relationship? Vision is often expressed in intangibles, too.
Mission is action: what is accomplished, how it is evaluated, corrected, and celebrated. Mission is all about verified goal fulfillment. Values and Vision without Mission are basically concepts without proofs.
Message constitutes life lessons learned and applied. What central truths are core to your investment in your follower if you are the leader? What do you want your follower to remember, above all else?
Values, Vision, Mission and Message are the DNA of every organization, regardless of size. From a one-on-one leader-follower relationship to anything larger, they are essential to living, growth, and duplication of positive legacy.
