Taking initiative is a hallmark of great leaders who want to make positive differences on core teams. Initiative-taking is not personality-driven; rather, it comes from a leader’s desire to see his or her followers succeed, and it drives the leader to create environments of productivity into which other team members contribute.
Taking initiative is a sign of developing health and maturity—especially when, because of the leader’s example and teaching, the initiative for resolution to difficult or challenging issues comes from the membership, not just the leader. When followers become initiative-takers they become leaders in their own right, and this is right. A great leader desires this kind of growth for the people who serve under and with him or her.
Consider, if you are the leader: How often do your followers initiate solutions for you to weigh as opposed to leaning solely on you to provide the answers to the difficult issues? The more your followers create and initiate, the better your leadership is being transferred appropriately into the hearts, heads, and hands of those who generally are tasked with solution implementation.
