Volume III, Number 6January, 2008
Follow-through is something we think followers should do.  When they perform well leaders like it; when they don’t, leaders have to decide how to deal with unfinished business.
Leaders teach followers how to follow.
So if your followers aren’t following through like you want, if you have to chase them for information, check on them, make sure that tasks are being done, let’s start with the kind of leadership you are providing.
Leaders teach followers how to follow before they teach followers how to lead.  Inherent in that truth is this one: effective leaders showcase the kind of accountability they desire from followers by first providing that kind of accountability to followers.  What kind of leadership example are you providing?
Leadership that teaches followers well observes those who respond and those who don’t.  Great leaders invest in the ones who do because leaders know that committed people create their own committed followers and that’s what a secure leader wants.
