Leaders
model the kinds of communication they want. These forms of communication include accurate information dissemination
and the verification that what was said was what was heard.
You’ve
heard the expression, “It was lost in the transmission.” That condition, unfortunately, happens too
often on teams, no matter how effective they are in getting their jobs done.
How
does a leader assure that what has been articulated by the leader is what has
been received by the follower? One of
the best ways is to ask an open-ended question to the listener. This interchange could be, “Could you repeat
back what you heard me say? I want to be
sure I was clear.”
Communication
of this kind is a real life demonstration of making decisions about another’s
success. Make sure you said it right,
heard it right, and repeated it right to assure that the transmission was
error-free.
