The Wedge
I have a favorite Mexican restaurant here in San Diego. I have enjoyed dining there for over 25 years. I have ordered the same meal—yes, the same meal—for that entire time. Sounds like a rut, yes? Actually, I just know what I want.
While I thoroughly enjoy the food, atmosphere, and service there is one incredibly annoying factor that for years I have put up with, and such a simple fix is required to even things out, literally.
San Diego has great weather so much of the time that it is a joy to eat outside often. At this restaurant the outside tables wobble, a lot. Folded napkins, upside down forks, pieces of paper, sugar packets, all have been utilized to stabilize the wobbly tables. What is needed is a wedge, a simple device that when centered underneath the shaking table leg, stabilizes the structure, and makes for an even tempered surface and a more enjoyable meal.
A wedge provides balance. A team’s agreements on Values, Vision, Mission, and Message is the wedge that provides balance in unstable times and creates atmospheres where distractions are reduced and better decisions can be made.
What is the wedge of your organization that brings balance to your operations? Or is your team content to try to work efficiently while wobbling and hobbling?
